Houses, Signs and Body Parts

Hello and welcome back. I hope you’ve been enjoying these posts which are designed to give you a basic understanding of astrology and begin to apply it to your own chart. Understanding your own energy is an important part of self-awareness and empowerment. Once you understand where your energy is mostly housed and the elemental basis of your chart, you can have a better assessment of what’s going on and how you may want to interact with it to lead to the greatest growth.

Today I want to introduce you to the houses. In doing so I am going to touch on the signs, body parts and the planets they represent. That’s right, each sign is represented in different body parts!

I’m sure if you’ve ever read a beginner’s astrology book, you know it’s usually presented where each sign is described one by one, then each planet, then each house.

First of all- That’s a lot to memorize!

More importantly, I think that teaches it in a way that doesn’t give a big picture view.  

Understanding this energy of Aries as “I” on the I-we axis, then understanding the first house of how I show up in the world and then Mars, which is my assertiveness and initiating energy in life. We see how it’s the same go-getter energy that runs through all three! By learning this way, you’re going to have a different vision of astrology and most importantly- your chart.

So the way I am showing you isn’t just memorizing a bunch of associated words. There is not some complete grouping of descriptive words that can explain each of the signs. They are essentially an archetypal energy we all experience.

What is an archetypal energy? Archetypal has to do with large ideas that we all have in our mind. For example, the concept of Hero or Mother. Not your specific mother, the idea as a society we picture as mother- warm, safe, nurturing etc. That CONCEPT of mother is an Archetype. Something we all have rooted deep in our minds symbolically.

Symbols were created by man to house ideas. Many many words fit into a single symbol. It’s the whole of those words, yet the full meaning is greater than the words (gestalt). So, you have to become more and more familiar with the ideas and concepts, the archetype behind each sign. Over time you’ll understand the archetypal energy.

So, let’s start with what is an astrology house...

Around the wheel the Ascendant (star rising on the east) is the beginning of your 1^st house. The chart is set up so that the signs, in their order from Aries to Pisces follow, the first house in YOUR chart is determined by your time of birth. See blog on how to locate your chart:

Each house represents an AREA of life. The first house is yourself and how you show up in the world. So whatever sign your first house is in, will tell us that about you.  
The Axis across from the first house, the 7^th house, is partnerships and what you look for and how you relate to partners. So, the sign that its in can tell us about what you look for in partners or how a partner will experience you. You might be a gentle water sign, but with some fire in the 7^th house, your partner will surely know that you’re feistier then you seem to anyone else. You’ll also tend to be attracted to outgoing, risk taking men or women, who often give a bit of extra attention to their looks.

However, imagine we just set up a chart with Aries as the first house. Since it’s the first sign. Taurus on the 2^nd house because it’s the second sign. This is the “natural” rulership of the houses. What that means is, when you think, wait what is the 1^st house again? Think Aries- Self, oh yea, it’s who I am and how I come across in the world! This can help you to remember the houses, but it also makes it easier to get a sense of the “archetypal energy” of Aries.

As kind of a side note, each sign has a house, a body part and a planet it represents. I’m going to mention the associated planet to start getting you familiar with it. Future posts will get into each of these specifically, but we have to start with a big picture view, then fill in the details.  

Houses and Body Parts:

1st house- I, me, the self, who I am in the world, how people see me.

              Sign: Aries

              Body: Head

              Planet: Mars

2^nd house- Possessions, materials and wealth, personal values and self value.

    Sign: Taurus

    Body: Throat and neck

            Planet: Venus (one of the few signs that shares a planet)

3^rd house- Communications, thinking process, learning

             Sign: Gemini

             Body: Doubles, Lungs, shoulders, hands, nervous system

             Planet: Mercury (one of the few signs that shares a planet)

4^th house- Home, family, safety, early childhood, mother, womb

              Sign: Cancer

              Body: Breasts, chest, stomach

              Planet/Luminary: Moon

 5^th house- Children, romance, creative endeavors, hobbies, play

              Sign: Leo

              Body: Heart, spine

              Planet/Luminary: Sun

6^th house- Health, daily routines, work environment

              Sign: Virgo

              Body: Digestive system, spleen, nervous system

              Planet: Mercury

7^th house- Relationships, partnerships, enemies, things I consider “other”

              Sign: Libra

              Body: Kidneys, skin

              Planet: Venus

8^th house- Other people’s possessions, power, deep relationships, sex, death/ transformation

              Sign: Scorpio

              Body: Sexual Organs, bowels, reproductive system

              Planet: Pluto

9^th house- Travel, adventure, foreign, wisdom/philosophy/religion, abstract/big picture, adventures.

              Sign: Sagittarius

              Body: Hips, thighs, sciatic nerve

              Planet: Jupite

10^th house- Work, reputation, rituals, traditions, father

              Sign: Capricorn

              Body: Calves, knees, joints

              Planet: Saturn

11^th house- Friends, organizations, groups, hopes/dreams, collective

              Sign: Aquarius

              Body: Ankles, circulatory system

              Planet: Uranus

12^th house- Unconscious, spiritual, ethereal, escapism from reality, what you can’t see.

              Sign: Pisces

              Body: Feet

              Planet: Neptune

So, when you look at your chart, lets note which houses have the most planets?

Which house is your sun and moon in?

Venus and Mars?

Are there oppositions or squares?
