WATER - Element Series 2 of 4
Water (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio)

Hi and welcome back to the Element Series. In this article I’m going to discuss the water element. Having an understanding of the foundations of the elements will open up the rest of the signs as we move along. What is important to understand is that you have a basic and natural understanding of these elements. They are foundational to life. Sitting with these concepts and beginning to notice them in everyday life will get you thinking in this direction. As you get a strong sense of the elements you’ll begin to sense them in energy form- the most prominent element in other individuals and situations and can therefore alter how to you handle the situation for optimal outcomes.

All of the astrology signs and planets can be reduced to their element. Each element has 3 signs. For Water, they are Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio. Eventually you will understand the slight differences between them. For example, Cancer (the crab) is very mothering, nurturing and protective. It has sensors way out there trying to pick up even the slightest hint of danger. What it senses however, it takes very personal and feels things quite sensitively. Pisces is similar in being sensitive in the world, but it doesn’t take things as personal, it’s a more universal or objective sensing which is why they tend to receive intuition more clearly. In Pisces, there is more accepting life and what it is given. Scorpio, like Cancer is heightened in a protective way and tends to take things personally, but instead of becoming sensitive as defense it goes on the offense to protect- stinging first and making sure it is not ever caught off guard. Don’t worry about remembering these differences right now if you are not familiar with the elements yet. I only offer them as a glimpse into future discussions.

For now, let’s start with Water!

Water is a gentle, wavering sign. Water always takes the path of least resistance (think of it sneaking through and around rocks and crevices). Water can be stagnant like a marsh, it can be cleansing like the river or tumultuous like the ocean. However, it is always life-giving and life-sustaining. It is the essential emotion which is necessary for life. The mother, the moon, the ocean, the depth. Things are personal, subjective, emotional and intuitive with water. A lot of water can be confusing and illusive too, the way water plays tricks of perception in reflection. In fact, much like the reflection, water often reflects others emotions or the environment. It reacts and feels in a way that reflects the other/environment. It doesn’t always know what is real, what is self and what is influence; which one is the reflection?

Water can flexibly shift to fit any shape, it can have great depth or be quite shallow. It can over flow its container or boil away. It can freeze or, with wind, become destructive. Think about all the forms of water in the natural world. Think about boiling water in a pot, rain, evaporation, hail and snow, rivers, lakes etc. Without water there is no life as we know it. It is the womb, and it taps into the subtle vibrations all around us.

Elemental Interactions:

Water and Fire - Water appreciates the emotional connection from fire but often this combination can feel without containment, grounding or safety. They’re emotional, passionate and in the moment- but not forward thinking, practical or objective. Fire can warm water up, helping it feel more comfortable and less shy. Of course, fires nature is not to know when it is enough and it can boil the water away. Nevertheless, water will evaporate and eventually return. Water can handle the emotion of fire, but doesn’t always appreciate the big dramatic show of emotion fire puts on. Rather, it values the subtle and the unspoken and appreciates a gentle way of expressing oneself.

Water and Earth - There is a lovely exchange between earth and water. Water slowly and patiently helps earth to move, change and adapt. Water keeps it to the areas earth can handle (path of least resistance), slowly over millions of years working its way through the earth. It is patient and non-demanding of earth. Earth gives water a feeling of safety and containment it seeks. A sense of reliability and security. Its constant and consistent presence becomes something water can rely on. Together they provide the physical safety and emotional nurturance for life to form.

Water and Air - Water and Air have an interesting relationship because in some ways air is a part of water (H2O). Yet, air sits atop the water, not really interacting with it. They have a symbiotic relationship (think water evaporation and precipitation). This relationship is much the dynamic of the subjective-objective. Looking at the world through one’s personal experiences versus looking at it via facts. Both are needed, but they don’t always feel good to one another. Water can be left feeling not heard or understood by air because the emotions aren’t validated. Air can feel water is heavy and pulling them down into emotionality too often. When air and water team up they can create quite a force, air bringing some wind, some movement, to water and water offering air a distinct physical presence. Their flexibility with one another can be complimentary but sometimes lacking in decision making; think about how water can flow into anything and how air is flexible in its shape as well.

Planets in Water:

Now let’s think about how water influences the planets. Any planet in a water sign will tend to take on some of the characteristics of water. I would think of it as the energy of that planet slowing down to feel into things, needing support and validation and connection in these areas. These are the places that are more emotional than logical for you.

If the Moon (emotions) is in a water sign, you will be very emotionally receptive, connected to your feelings and having to meet your emotional needs throughout the day. You will tend towards emotional responses instinctively. These may be more internal than external and emotional stability in others may be very appealing to you.

If Mercury (mental energy) is in water your thought process may be a bit slower or languid. You may not tend to remember facts very well and are drawn to information with an emotional component to connect with. For example, in the story of how a lifesaving drug helped a little girl, you may tend to remember the details about her life and the incredible moments of intense emotion the family felt yet not remember the facts about the drug that saved her, how it worked or why it was created. You may connect well with music or think in more creative/pictorial ways.

If Venus (relationships) is in water you tend to have a strong need for emotional connection and support in relationships. The quality of how you feel with the person will rule your choices of relationship and there will be a need for a gentleness in interactions.

So, I hope that gives you a picture of the water element.

  1. I really like the metaphors used to describe water. And the breakdown of the relationships between the elements. It made me recall relationships of past and how we mimicked the elements interacting together. Thanks for letting me see this in practical terms.
